New shooters
New shooters are welcome to participate in the matches. If you are new to the YVPS matches, please plan to attend a "new shooter orientation session" at 9:30am on the morning of a match. During this session we will provide an orientation to the sport, acquaint you with match rules and review safety procedures. YVPS follows the rules set out in the USPSA Handgun Rulebook. We ask that you familiarize yourself with these rules before you participate in a match.
Yampa Valley Practical Shooters (YVPS) is a shooting club located in the Yampa Valley of Northwest Colorado. We are affiliated with the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). Although practical shooting encompasses handgun, rifle and/or shotgun, YVPS focuses exclusively on handgun shooting.

Safety
At Routt County Rifle Club, safety is our highest priority. Because of this, YVPS runs a cold range. This means your weapon is unloaded with nothing in the magazine well, nothing in the chamber, and the hammer or striker is down. You may only handle your weapon in the confines of your vehicle, in one of the two Safety Areas, or under the direct commands of a Range Officer (RO). You may never load your weapon until the RO gives you the clear command to "Load and make ready!" You must always point your weapon in a safe direction, and you may never handle ammunition in the Safety Area. Our sport is governed by numerous additional safety rules as outlined in the USPSA Handgun Rulebook. A safety review is done before each match.
